I wrote this last year for Spike's birthday, and posted it in his journal when I updated his biography. That link also contains a short bio of what he's done in his years at Milliways.

Here's the deal: I like knowing about my roleplay characters. If I don't feel that I know them well enough, I can't play them effectively. So when there are characters like Spike, who have completed canons and whose personalities are (to me) so well defined, it's a joy to do this kind of thing. Bebop the show is a gorgeous slice-of-life, a little window into eight or ten or twelve months in four futuristic lives. While the lack of backstory is something some people moan about, I think it's kind of appropriate that we really don't know a whole lot about what happened before and what happens after. That leaves so much room for the imagination to fill in the missing pieces. I like to think I've done that in a sensible way, but everyone's got their own opinions on things like how Spike came to join the Dragons, and exactly what his relationship was with both Vicious and Julia, and whether or not he's really gone at the end. He's kind of a classic bad guy with a heart of gold, but there are so many facets to his personality that he's a never-ending surprise, too. It's no wonder he's my favorite character to play, and just about my favorite fictional character ever.
